Charlie Mariano is more than an internationally succesful saxophone player; he's long to be counted among the legends of his profession.

Born in 1923, Mariano began his career in 1941, playing with professional showbands, later working with Jazz-figureheads like Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Charles Mingus, the United Jazz & Rock Ensemble and many more; he's one of the last living contemporary witnesses of the BeBop-Era, too. However, he did lend his typical sound not to Jazz projects alone; especially since beginning of the 80s, many Pop-Musicians (like german stars Herbert Grönemeyer, Konstantin Wecker, a.m.o.) called on Mariano when expressive sax was needed. The secret of his long and succesful career is surely found in his immense versatility which in turn is explained by Mariano's deep interest in music forms outside his original domain, the jazz. He travelled the world extensively and lived several years in India, where he also learned to play the Nagaswaram [an instrument comparable to the oboe]. His love for that country hasn't left him in the years after; it left his mark not only on his work with the group Embryo [which was revolutionary in it's time] but also in his productions under his own name. A great example of his border-crossing understanding of music is the album ''Live with the Karnataka College Of Percussion'', which has meanwhile become a classic. It was followed -- or should we say continued -- by the 1999 release "Bangalore", which excited critics and audience throughout the world. Charlie Mariano continues to live and work in Cologne, Germany.
